New GO! Friendly Pattern – Honey Bee Hive

Honey Bee Hive by Lori Miller Designs

Introducing Honey Bee Hive, this pattern has been all of the buzz. This is an AccuQuilt GO! Friendly pattern. It uses the Storm at Sea Block on Board Die and several strip dies.

Honey Bee Block by Lori Miller Designs

This little quilt has a special place in my heart. My Dad was a beekeeper for over 50 years. I used to go and help him work the bees and take off the honey. The honey was so delicious.

Honey Bee Hive – Baby or Wall Hanging by Lori Miller Designs

I designed my quilt using Electric Quilt Design software. Honey Bee Hive comes in three sizes, Baby or Wall hanging, Throw Size and Queen, of course.

This pattern only comes with AccuQuilt GO! Cutter instructions. You will need the following dies:

  • GO Storm at Sea Die (9” Finished) (55221)
  • GO! Strip Cutter 3 ½” (3” Finished Strip Die (55032)
  • GO! Strip Cutter – 1 ½” (1” Finished) (55024) OR GO! Strip Cutter – 2 ½” (2” Finished) (55017) depending on Quilt size.

I love the accurately cut pieces which makes string piecing go quickly.

New Pattern – Bundle Up Holiday Coasters

Hello Friends! I have a new pattern available called Bundle Up Holiday Coasters. Featuring four mix and match designs, these super cute little guys are the perfect last minute homemade gift. All of the designs are centered around my Bundle Up for Winter theme, a mitten, stocking, Knit Cap and Turtleneck with Sweater Vest.

This pattern started out with the Mini Mitten which was published by itself in Modern Patchwork Gifts back in 2016. It was so cute, I had to add a few more coaster designs to create a collection.

Want to add a little pizazz to your coasters? Try fussy cutting and piecing the sweater vest with adorable prints like these. You can go crazy creating these. For these coasters, I quilted by using straight stitch quilting on the diagonal with a walking foot about 1/4″ apart.

Need to whip up the coasters in a jiffy, go for the simple stocking and just a 3 way color scheme. Those polkadots are just too cheery. Again I am straight line quilting with a walking foot, this time straight up and down.

These coasters don’t take much fabric either, you could easily make them with your holiday fabric scraps.

The pattern is available now in my Etsy Shop HERE.

In Memory of Cookie Cat

I had the best kitty in the world. His name was Cookie Cat and he was special. A lovely gray and white tabby, he was gentle and kind and he smelled like cotton candy. He was my quilting companion and he had my heart.

He would follow me downstairs to my sewing room and just stay with me while I sewed and quilted.  Whenever I started quilting, he would appear and try to help.  I would look away for a second and he would be…right..THERE.  LOL

I had this little rolling cart and I finally put his cat bed in there and I would just roll him around the room with me.

In 2017, I designed a quilt in his honor with a big block and his sweet face on it and I called it, Cookie cat.

I thought it was adorable and versatile, four blocks for a baby quilt and one block for a pillow.

We have a little black kitty named Oreo too and to not be left out, I made some Halloween pillows in the pattern for him too.

But this sweet boy was my little shadow.  At the beginning of 2020, he was diagnosed with cancer.  I was glad to be home due to Covid to take care of him.   He was spoiled rotten and got anything he wanted.

He started to just come and want to sleep in the bay window in front of my sewing machine.  He could see the birds and squirrels.  He would still follow me downstairs and just be with me while I quilted and sewed.

He passed away just after Thanksgiving and it hit me hard.  I still miss him.  I decided that I would do something to honor his devotion to me and celebrate that pure love he gave to me.

I have updated my Cookie Cat pattern with his picture and I have reduced the price in my shop.  You can find it HERE!

This year, 2021, I am going to give the proceeds from this pattern to my local humane society.  A tiny way to give back to the place where I rescued Cookie cat to begin with and a way to honor and grieve him in a positive way.

I appreciate your support of my charity this year and wish you too will experience the joy and unconditional love of a pet.

Warm Wishes,

Lori

NEW Patterns – Florette and Nova

NEW PATTERNS

Even though I have been sewing and quilting during this pandemic, I have had a lot of secret projects to finish.  Now I get to share some of my own work with all of you.  I have several new patterns on the horizon and these are the first ones out of the hopper and  I am so happy to share them with you.

FLORETTE

This first pattern is called Florette.  It is a sweet table runner that changes its mood by just changing the colors.  The individual blooms are a variation of a log cabin block.  So bright and cheery, this pieces together in no time at all.  I just grabbed some scraps from the bin and put it all together.  This would be a great gift for a friend, housewarming, or something cheery for your own table this winter.

This table runner finishes at 14″ x 42″.

Available at my shop HERE

NOVA

Next up is this clever two color star quilt I am calling Nova.  It is made up of a lot of flying geese!

I love the two color design that creates the striking star blocks.  However, it would be easy to add a little red to make this a Patriotic quilt.  My pattern includes instructions to create four flying geese at a time to make stitching it up go even faster.  The Sashing and borders also help to easily square up this quilt and make it a little more forgiving for beginner quilters.

This pattern comes in three sizes:

  • Baby    42″ x 42″
  • Throw (Pictured) 56″ x 70″
  • Twin 70″ x 84″

Nova available in my shop HERE

New Products Available: EQ8 Block Library for Accuquilt Blocks

I am very excited to introduce a new product in my shop.  Most of you know that I am an EQ8 Superfan.  I design my quilts in EQ8, I teach EQ8, and I use EQ8 to create my original patterns.  This past year I finally jumped on the Accuquilt bandwagon and became an Accuquilt GO! Getter.  I love how quickly I can cut out a quilt and have a project all ready to sew.

I received an 8″ GO Qube with my Accuquilt GO! Cutter.  I really wanted to design with the Accuquilt 8″ blocks in EQ8, but there was not a library file of the blocks to be found, so I decided to create them.  I got approvals from both companies and created a downloadable file containing all of those Accuquilt blocks drawn in EQ8.  Now they are available in my shop.

The blocks provided by Accuquilt to use with the GO! Qube are all Four patch blocks.  These blocks are based upon a 2 X 2 grid, the most popular style of quilt block.

Accuquilt provides 216 Block designs with their popular GO! Qube die sets

  • For the base GO! Qube Mix and Match die set, there are 72 blocks.
  • For the add on Companion CORNERS set, combined with the Mix and Match die set, there are 72 blocks.
  • For the add on Conpanion ANGLES set, combined with the Mix and Match die set and the Companion Corners set, there are 72 blocks.

For my product launch, I am offering EQ8 Library files with a set of blocks that match them.  They contain the GO! Qube Mix and Match set, the Add On Companion Corners set, and the Add on Companion Angles set for a combined total of 216 blocks.

These EQ8 Block Library files are downloadable digital files that are designed to work with your EQ8 Quilt Design Software.  They are only compatible with EQ8.

Required: A running copy of EQ8 Quilt Design Software.

It is a downloadable digital file that you will place into your personal block library.  Once you place the block file in your library, you will be able to use it immediately to draw and design quilts.  I have included all of the instructions to add the files to your EQ8.  You will receive the EQ8 Block library, a block reference guide and an instruction document.  The blocks are all labeled and colored similarly to the blocks provided by Accuquilt so they are easy to match up.

The files currently come in five sizes, 6″, 8″, 9″, 10″ and 12″ sizes.  They are color coordinated by size in the shop so you can find the size you need.

Please note:  If you have more than one size of Qube, you only need one size of library.  Once you have the EQ8 Library for Accuquilt installed into EQ8, you can easily resize to your other size Qubes as it will scale properly.  You can certainly purchase other sizes for convenience, but it is not necessary.

Once you have designed your quilt, you can use your Accuquilt GO! Cutter to make it.  I have also included tips and suggestions for determining what dies to use and how to determine fabric requirements.

I hope you enjoy these files as you create your Four Patch 2 X 2 grid design quilts.

You can purchase these downloadable files in my shop HERE!

I appreciate your feedback and suggestions on this product.

New Patterns Available

Winter is a good time to stay inside and catch up on some things.  I have had these patterns on my to do list for a while.  They were all published in magazines originally, but now they are updated, have multiple sizes, and are available for download in my  Etsy Shop.

Cookie Cat

This one is a favorite since I designed it based upon my sweet Cookie Cat.

It is a large 18″ block so it is easy to piece and goes together quickly.

It comes in three sizes, pillow, baby quilt and twin size.  I stitched up a set of Halloween pillows and they turned out great.

Beach Glass

This quilt started out strictly as a scrap quilt.  I fell in love with the greens and blues and they reminded me of the little bits of beach glass you find on Great Lakes beaches here in Michigan.

The variety of grey low volume prints from my stash were perfect to create the neutral background.

This is also a large 18″ block.  It comes in three sizes, Throw, Twin and Queen.

Cirque

This was my most recently published quilt.  I really wanted to try some curved piecing and these large traditional drunkard’s path blocks seemed perfect.

The color blocking adds a modern twist and I just had to play with free motion feathers in the negative space.  Cookie cat is not a good helper when I am quilting, how does he know when I am trying to quilt?  LOL

These are 10″ finished blocks.  Once again, available in three sizes, Baby, Throw and Twin.

Cirque MINI

I have been really enjoying making mini versions of some of my most popular quilts.  Not everyone needs another large quilt and this size makes a wonderful wall hanging that is a work of modern art.

These are 5″ finished blocks and it comes in only one size, Mini which is about 24″ x 30″

I hope you found a new pattern you liked and would like to try.

They are all available as PDF digital files ready for immediate download.

You can find them and my other fresh, fun quilty designs in my  Etsy Shop.

New Pattern: Summer Harvest Quilt

My next pattern is ready for Sale!  Summer Harvest is a super easy Throw Quilt made from 9 1/2″ quilt blocks.  It will be the perfect project for a beginning quilter this summer.

It uses precut 10 inch squares so you can break open that fabulous pile of fabric you have been waiting to use.  It lends itself to any season, but these bright Malka Dubrowski prints really pop with the colors of the farmer’s market in summer.

This quilts was originally featured on the cover of Quick to Stitch Precuts Magazine in 2015, but now it is available as a PDF download.

The pattern is super easy and the precut 10 inch blocks and assembly instructions let you easily strip piece the blocks in a hurry.

You create these leaf style blocks and sew them together in rows and columns.

Here is the quilt top all pieces and ready for pin basting.

This was my original Electric Quilt 7 design, but I decided to add some narrow sashing between the columns to set off the bright fabrics.

I even used the scraps cut from the corners to piece the backing for this quilt.  A great way to use the leftovers.

I also quilted this throw with my Bernina 630 and some free motion quilting.  I used a cute leave motif for each block.

I hope you have as much fun making this quilt as I did!

You can purchase my Summer Harvest Pattern as a PDF download by going to the My Patterns tab and following the link to My Etsy Shop!

New Patterns – Infinity Quilt and Infinity MINI Quilt

I am pleased to share my latest two published patterns.  My Infinity Quilt and a MINI version of Infinity.

If this quilt looks familiar, you are right.  It was a featured quilt in the Spring 2016 Modern Quilts Unlimited Magazine.

I also had the privilege of showing Infinity at the 2017 International Quilt Festival Chicago in the Modern exhibit this past spring.  It was very exciting.

I have updated the Infinity pattern since the magazine to include three sizes, throw, twin and queen size.

I also love the idea of having a mini version of one of my favorite quilts.  So this little version is available as a separate pattern with a size of 24 1/2″ x 26″.

And of course I had to make a sample.  Here is a little tour of making the MINI quilt.

I need to add that  I use Electric Quilt software.  With EQ 7, I could easily size down my pattern to make this mini quilt with very little effort!  I love designing in EQ!

I did a lot of string piecing and I had to show this cute little sunflower quilts gadget to snip the threads between your string piecing.  I picked it up at the Chicago show.  So practical and cute!

There are quite a few half square triangles and I square them up as I go.

It is so fun to see the mini design come together!  I am pinning with my hello kitty box of pins.  Yeah, I got it in McDonald’s meal as a prize.

So I had just taken a class at Quiltcon for free motion feathers and I had just splurged on a new sewing machine.  A babylock Jazz!  So I had to try it out.  I mimicked the quilting I used on my large quilt.  The designs are so cute in miniature.

You can purchase my Infinity Quilt Pattern and Infinity MINI Quilt Pattern as a PDF download from MY PATTERNS tab and following the link to My Etsy Shop!

Thanks for letting me share!  Tag me on Instagram at lorimillerdesigns, I would love to see your version!

DIY Holiday Gift Ideas

2016 holiday by Lori Miller Designs

I enjoy making handmade gifts for the holidays to give to family and friends.  Some years they are elaborate and some years, well, they are quick and easy.  It depends on how busy I have gotten with projects to finish.  I have put together a round up of my free tutorials to make diy holiday gifts. They range from super easy to confident beginner, from quick to more involved.  I even share a few of my for sale holiday patterns at the end if they should perk your interest.  I hope you will be inspired to try some homemade gifts this year.  Just CLICK on the picture for all the details.

Holiday Yo Yo Ornament

Create fun holiday yo-yo ornaments for a homemade gift for a teacher, music instructor or bus driver.  A nice sewing craft for older children to learn some basic sewing skills, even how to sew a button.  You can make it even faster with some hot glue at the finish.  Plan an afternoon to put these together for holiday gifts or your own homemade decorations.

Tissue Holder

Here is a cute quick gift you can stitch up in multiples for holiday party favors, stocking stuffers or just a little something for someone special.  I used holiday and Christmas fabric but you could tailor them for boys or girls with masculine prints, sporty fabric or another cute novelty print.  There is really very little sewing so it is perfect for a beginning stitcher.  It doesn’t take much fabric either, so use up some of your scraps or stash.

Easy Holiday Fleece Pillows

Here are a couple of ideas for some last minute holiday gifts to stitch.  You probably have a stash of fleece somewhere in your sewing room from a sale 3 years ago, if not, find yourself a couple of remnants and get sewing.  Cotton works fine too.  These are some clever and creative pillows for big and little kids to enjoy. They stitch up in a snap so they are quick and easy for a beginner to make.

Upcycled Christmas Card Bookmarks

upcycled bookmarks by lori Miller Designs

I received one of these upcycled Christmas card bookmarks as a little gift and it is just too clever not to share.  This bookmark is an ingeniously folded old christmas card.  I took it apart to figure out the pattern and I am gladly spilling its simple but intricate secrets.  Make a bunch for stocking stuffers, for an afternoon craft with the kids or to mail to friends far away for the holiday.

Holiday Table Runner

Here is a free tutorial for a project designed with EQ Mini Software by The Electric Quilt Company.  This Holiday Table Runner uses one of the built in blocks colored with traditional Christmas colors to create a lovely item for your home decor.  Just make three simple blocks to quilt up a beautiful center piece for your table.

Paper Snowflake Garland

Here in Michigan, we manage to get our own share of snow.  I would much rather deal with these paper snowflakes from inside my warm and toasty house instead.  And the plan is to sew them together into pretty garland, so you get a little sewing and fun mixed together.  When did you last make a paper snowflake?

This would be a great afternoon activity with the kids to cut out snowflakes and drink some hot chocolate. You can even use up all that junk mail or scrap paper to make them. I love traditional white flakes, but you could mix them up with any color to make a very cool statement.

Patterns for Sale

Here are a couple of holiday patterns I have for sale in my shop.  I hope you like them too.

Gingerbread House Pincushion, Ornament and More

LMDesigns trio of gingerbread

This is my original pattern for a Gingerbread House Pincushion.  I have even added bonus instructions to make it into a soft tree ornament or a Gift Card Holder to hang on your Christmas tree.  This adorable holiday gift idea might look familiar.  It was featured in Quilting Arts Holiday Magazine in 2014.  It holds a special place in my heart because this was the very first original pattern that I had published in a Magazine.

Poinsettia Pop Throw Quilt

It is called Poinsettia Pop and it is a generous lap size to snuggle under when the weather turns cold.  The bright and cheery poinsettia blocks dance across the quilt bringing cheer to whoever receives it. This quilt is made using large 15 inch finished blocks that stitch up quickly.  You only need to piece seven Poinsettia blocks so you can whip it up in time for last minute gifts. I even included some speedy techniques to save you some time.  The bright hot pink fabrics, text print background, and alternate grid pattern give this block a very modern look.

Mini Mitten Coasters

I am pleased to share my latest published work, mini mitten coasters!  They are super cute, easy to stitch up and you can use some cute coordinating holiday prints or make them super scrappy with some leftover holiday fabric.

They are featured on page 34 of Modern Patchwork Gifts 2016.  This is the third year I have been published in the holiday issue and I couldn’t be more thrilled.

I hope you found an idea you could use for some holiday gifts or just to make for yourself.
