Happy Hues Block of the Month

I am so excited to announce that I was asked to design Happy Hues, the new Block of the Month (BOM) for American Patchwork and Quilting. All People Quilt will be exploring color, contrast and value with this medallion quilt in a rainbow of hues.

Patterns will launch on the second Tuesday of each month. And for this BOM, they will provide BOTH Rotary cutting and AccuQuilt cutting directions. That means everyone can join in!

This quilt finishes at 80″ X 80″ square. I used Shadow Blush and Superior Solids fabrics from Benartex. The Fabric requirements have just been posted on the website, so gather what you need to get started in September. Instructions will be included for traditional Rotary Cutting AND for AccuQuilt Cutting. Join us for 7 months of quilty fun.

If you are using AccuQuilt, you will need the following dies:

  • 55776: GO! Qube Mix & Match 8″ Block
  • 55017: Strip Cutter 2 1/2″ (2″ Finished)
  • 55025: Strip Cutter 2″ (1 1/2″ Finished)
  • 55024: Strip Cutter 1 1/2″ (1′ Finished

This quilt was designed with EQ8 Quilt Design Software. It is my go to tool for designing beautiful quilts.

I used blocks from my EQ8 Add-on Block Libraries for AccuQuilt. Each library for the AccuQuilt GO! Qube contain 60 blocks that are compatible with AccuQuilt GO! Cutters.

The center block of the Quilt is from my Sweet Sixteen EQ8 Block Library called Bursting Star.

The Blocks in the outer border are from my Five Patch Fun EQ8 Block Library. The blocks are Crossroads Butterfly, Friendship Twist, Nest and Fledgling, and Duck and Ducklings.

Grandma Town BOM #11 – Apron Quilt Block

Can you believe it?  This is the last block for the Grandma Town Row by Row.  It is the green gingham apron my Grandmother wore.  She always cooked wearing an apron and I have a lovely green calico apron that I made her for a gift that was given back to me as a keepsake.  It is a cherished item.  This large apron block finishes at 12″ x 12″.  You will only need one apron block for this quilt and it is centered between the pies and canning jars.

Grandma Mabel’s favorite color was green.  I always thought that was strange as most girls said they loved pink.  I actually am more in tune with Grandma now and love the freshness of a bright apple green color.   I can still see Grandma rolling out some pies or working on Sunday dinner wearing her faithful aprons to keep her dress clean.  I have a collection of vintage aprons and they make me think of my special Grandma.

Grandma Town Block of the Month

If you are new to the Grandma Town BOM, this row by row quilt was a labor of love to celebrate my Iowa roots.  I spent my childhood visiting my Grandparents on their farm just west of Des Moines in Earlham, Iowa.  It is especially a tribute to my dear Grandma.

When my sisters, brother and I were little and my parents would drive us to my grandparents farm, my brother would yell, “We are going to Grandma Town!”.  It was a loving tribute that stuck.  This little quilt is full of those reminders of the farm and of Grandma, who loved to garden and loved to cook.  Each block is a sweet memory of my youth growing up on that country farm.

Grandma Town BOM #10 – Chicken and Egg

Are you sewing along?  Grandma Town Block of the Month continues with this cute little chicken and egg.  On the farm, Grandma raised chickens for the eggs and for Sunday dinner.  There was a large hen house behind the house.  I never helped gather eggs, maybe grandma thought I would break them.  We did get to throw the food scraps and potato peelings over the fence for them and sometimes some cracked corn.  There were all kinds of chickens including little banny hens that ran around everywhere.  The Chicken blocks finish at 8” x 7”.  The Egg blocks finish at 3” x 7”.  You will need 6 chicken block and 5 egg blocks for the row of the quilt.

Grandma’s favorite chicken was a big red hen she named Molly.  Molly laid large colored eggs, they were sort of grayish green color.  Grandma also made delicious fried chicken, but the best was a scalloped chicken that she made which was kind of like chicken and stuffing.  It was crispy on the top and tasty all the way through.


I know my grandparents raised their own chickens, but luckily I did not ever have to experience how they got to the table.  This chicken pattern reminds me of Molly and her jumbo eggs.

Grandma Town BOM #9 – Home Sweet Home Double Quilt Block

This month’s Block of the Month is Grandma’s house and a couple of the large black walnut trees that lined the driveway.  It was a modest little house but it certainly felt like home from the moment you entered it.  This is a double block that finished at 15″ x 10″ and it is part of the center of the quilt in the same row as the Barnyard.  There are only two more blocks after this one, we are on the home stretch!

Grandma’s house always smelled of delicious food.  She was always cooking and baking.  She loved to cook and would design her own recipes, especially cookie recipes.  A local radio program would sponsor a contest and Grandma’s homemade cookies won every time.   Do you remember Kitchen Klatter out of Shenandoah, Iowa?  We would listen to the program together and try to write down all of the recipes.


The trees depicted in the picture are black walnut trees.  My Grandpa would gather them up and pick nut meats all winter.  Black walnuts have a unique flavor and they tasted wonderful in a cake or eaten straight out of the bag!

Pie is a glorious thing.  I choose it over cake or even chocolate.  My Grandma was a master pie maker and she taught me the secret art of a light and flaky crust.  This month’s Grandma Town Block of the Month is a PIE, of course.  My favorite pie is Gooseberry.  It is the green, tart cousin of the red currant.  It is simply heaven.
Grandma Town Pie Grandma always made two pies at a time and I have the recipe memorized.  She taught me how to spin that rolling pin on a giant wooden board that pulled out of an old spice cabinet hutch.  Her pies were the highlight of any meal, made with real lard and served with vanilla ice cream.  I think of her every time I pick gooseberries and make a tasty, sour lip smacking pie. You can make any kind of pie you like, I made blueberry and cherry. The Summer is flying by and it is time for another Grandma Town Block of the Month.  This month is a bonus double block called barnyard featuring a barn and grain silo.  Even though this quilt is called Grandma Town, I would be remiss if I did not include some memories of my Grandpa.  He was a short, tough guy who wore OshKosh Overalls and used a red bandanna as a hankerchief.   I would get to help with the chores and followed Grandpa around as we fed the animals and took care of the farm.

We would get ground corn from the grainery and Grandpa would hand me a galvanized bucket to scoop out the feed and take it to the cows and pigs.

My brother and sisters and I often played in the barn. I would also help Grandpa milk the cows on a little wooden 3 legged stool.  We even threw the hay bales down from the loft down to the wagon.


Both of these blocks combine to make a jumbo double block for the center of the quilt.  You will only need one of these jumbo blocks.

Can you believe that we are half way through the Grandma Town Block of the Month?  Are you sewing along?  If you are, post it on Instagram and tag me @lorimillerdesigns and #GrandmaTownBOM so I can see what lovely things you are stitching up.  This month we celebrate the start of summer with a cute little canning jar.  My Grandma had a large garden, grew her own vegetables and canned just about anything you can think of.


She made the most delicious pickles and relishes as well and they all went into canning jars we could savor all year long.

She even made sauerkraut in a great big stone jar, I love sauerkraut to this day.

You will need eight blocks of the canning jar for this quilt.  They sit on either side of the little apron.

My friend, Carol, whipped up this little canning jar full of hot peppers for me as another example.  You can fill them with whatever you like!

Well my sweeties, here is the next block in my Grandma Town BOM series – some lovely sweet hearts to share some love and joy this month.  These are made from one basic small heart block and combined together to create multiple sweet hearts in three rows.  You will need two of these multiple sweet hearts blocks. These hearts represent that wonderful, big hearted, unconditional and never ending love from Grandma.  And she and Grandpa were married on Valentines Day too.  There were a lot of grandchildren, but she had a way of making each of us feel special.  She had an inner joy that made her fun to be around and a creative, clever heart as well. These beating hearts are pieced using lots of red prints to compliment each other.  There are two blocks made up of eight hearts each.  These hearts bookend the farm building row. Grandma Town BOM Ear of Corn Lori Miller Designs

It is time for another block in my Grandma Town BOM series.  This month is one of my favorites, an ear of corn.  You can imagine it as field corn, but I prefer sweet corn.  I love, love, love some delicious Iowa Sweet corn.

We would pick it right out of the field, husk it and give it to Grandma to throw in a giant pot of boiling water on her stove.  I and my siblings would roll them in a stick of butter and eat the tender, juicy ears. There was nothing like eating it fresh.

This ear of corn block is pieced  I used a solid yellow for the corn and used lots of bright scrappy greens.  They look good enough to eat!  You will need to make one row of 10 blocks.

Nine Patch - Grandma Town BOM Lori Miller Designs

Is it Spring yet??  I laugh because it is snowing right outside my window right now.  Lets think happy thoughts like more quilting.  It is time for the next block of the month (BOM) for my Grandma Town Series.  This month is a couple of quick blocks, a Nine Patch and two Color Block rows.  Both of these are simple and will give you time to catch up with the two blocks already released.  I hope you are sewing your Grandma Town memories along with me row by row.

  My Grandma made very utilitarian quilts and the Nine Patch quilt square was simple to cut and stitch by hand.  I have found some churn dash squares that Grandma made on a quilt top I found in her attic, but most of her quilt tops certainly were made from a lot of Nine patches in very interesting color combinations.  They were made from scraps after all, and nothing went to waste.

  Since Grandma lived through the great depression and because I had been saving vintage and reproduction 30’s fabrics, I am pulling them out to make a 30’s version of this quilt too.  You may see some of these muted, tiny prints in my upcoming blog posts.  It will be an interesting look compared to my bright and bold colored Grandma Town Quilt.

You will need to make one row of  eight, nine-patch blocks.

You will also need to make two rows of color blocks.  This is just a group of 4 inch finished blocks.

 They highlight the center farm blocks and are arranged above and below to frame them.  You will need 16 blocks for each row.  A comprehensive pattern and directions for the Nine Patch block and color row blocks along with the whole BOM is currently in development.

I am so excited to introduce my new block of the month (BOM) series for 2015, Grandma Town.  This row by row quilt is a labor of love that I have dreamed of and worked on for over a year.  It is a celebration of my Iowa roots, and growing up visiting my Grandparents on their farm just west of Des Moines in Earlham, Iowa.  It is especially a tribute to my dear Grandma.

When my sisters, brother and I were little and my parents would drive us to my grandparents farm, my brother would yell, “We are going to Grandma Town!”.  It was a loving tribute that stuck.  This little quilt is full of those reminders of the farm and of Grandma, who loved to garden and loved to cook.  She made the best pies around and my favorite was the tart and tangy wild Gooseberry.  Each block is a sweet memory of my youth growing up on that country farm.

Forget Me Not Block 1

Grandma Town BOM #1 –  Forget Me Not

In your “Garden of memory”, please give me one little spot;

To cultivate the flower, they call “Forget – Me – Not”.

Here is my first block in the Grandma Town BOM series.  It is a  dainty Forget Me Not flower and it is the first and last row of blocks in this memory filled quilt. There is not a day that goes by that I don’t think of my Grandma and this little block is a lovely reminder of this.  It is a 5″ finished block and you will need to make 20 blocks.  Use all one color, or mix and match for a nice scrappy look.
